Administration and Human Resources – Ensuring Company And Employees Work Smoothly
Administration and Human Resources (which used to be known as “Personnel”) are essential departments of any business or organisation in both the public and private sectors.
Administrators are there to make sure every single business aspect of the company runs smoothly, while Human Resources staff look after the employee side of things, making sure they’re in the right position to match their skillset and, of course, making sure staff are happy in their position.
So you can see that businesses can’t really run efficiently without Administration and without Human Resources.
This explains why nearly one-fifth of the workforce in the UK work in administration, in one role or another.
They make sure day-to-day operations run seamlessly, whether they’re multimillion-pound deals happening in the boardroom, or just signing for a stationery delivery down in reception.
And this also explains why an administrator’s day is never, ever boring: whether it’s creating and agenda and setting up a meeting (including arranging tea, coffee and biscuits, of course!) … or putting together reports … or dealing with correspondence within the office or around the world – the success of all that, and more, is down to the administrator. And there’s always the phone to answer.
Small wonder administrators are vital to any business – after all, who else knows so much about what’s going on throughout the entire company?
Just as important as the administrators are the Human Resource department whose role is to make sure an employer has the right people doing the right jobs.
Working with management to recruit and train new staff, the role of the HR Department is to make sure the right people are in the right position to create the maximum benefit for the company.
Another of their duties is to ensure that the needs of the employers are met and their rights are respected by the business.
So if an employee’s disability needs to be catered for, or if stress raises its ugly head … or even if workplace bullying needs to be stopped in its tracks, it’s down to Human Resources to make sure it happens. HR is also responsible for matters of discipline within the company as well, but then again, on the bright side there’s always people’s holidays and time off that need booking too.
Notgoingtouni believe that to succeed in either of these roles there are a number of essential skills that a person needs to have.
These include basic numeracy, typing proficiency and good verbal and written communication skills.
You must be be able to keep cool working under pressure and have a good dose of personal organisation.
Organisations are crying out for these roles within their organisation and there is also a lot of scope for promotion.
Show a flair for your role, for example, and you could well find yourself very soon in a more responsible position like team leader, personal assistant or even making the move into management, and from there – who knows? – one day, you could even end up running the business yourself!
